Commander of MSC commends officers of USNS Montford Point

The following message dated Sept. 24 was sent to Captain Kurt Kleinschmidt, master on the USNS Montford Point, and Chief Engineer Joseph Gelhaus. The USNS Montford Point is operated for Military Sealift Command by Ocean Ships Inc. and is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.

Congratulations on your recent successful Final Contract Trial on MONTFORD POINT. I commend your leadership executing the trial events in all aspects of ship handling, propulsion and auxiliary machinery performance. It was apparent you worked closely with the PEO acquisition program and the MSC prepositioning program offices to develop the test events and schedule, marshal all necessary trial resources and practice to achieve crew proficiency in presentation. The overall ship INSURV Figure of Merit score of 0.94 is the highest observed for any lead Navy surface ship. It is noteworthy an MSC ship has set the standard to beat and the Command is justifiably proud of your accomplishment. Your team rocks!

Very Respectfully,

TK Shannon
Commander, Military Sealift Command
