State of Alaska thanks AMO ocean rangers

In a letter addressed to American Maritime Officers members who worked as ocean rangers aboard international cruise ships operating in Alaskan waters during the 2008 cruise season, Cruise Ship Program Manager Denise Koch of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation's Division of Water thanked ocean rangers for their service and discussed the state's ongoing development of the program.

In January 2008, the State of Alaska awarded a contract to provide 35 ocean rangers for the 2008 cruise season to Crowley Liner Services. More than 40 AMO members completed specialized training at STAR Center earlier this year and AMO ocean rangers began work in April at the beginning of the 2008 cruise season, which concluded in September.

"Thank you for your service to the State of Alaska as an ocean ranger," Koch wrote in the letter. "The Alaska public voted this program into existence and it has been a success. I expect that it will be in existence next year and will continue to improve."
