American Maritime Officers member Captain Fred Walley, master on the Ready Reserve Force ship S/S Wright , was presented with the Spirit Award at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., during a televised Major League Baseball game between the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies on May 25.
Walley received the award on behalf of the officers and crew of the Wright , which is operated for the Maritime Administration by Crowley Liner Services and is manned in all licensed positions by AMO. The Wright provided support to relief workers operating in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
Shortly after the storm, the Wright , along with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy training ship T.S. Kennedy , relocated to Staten Island, N.Y., providing accommodations and meals for more than 900 FEMA, Red Cross and other relief workers. Stationed in New York for more than a month, the 40 crew members aboard the Wright provided more than 4,000 overnight accommodations and 15,000 meals.
Receiving the Spirit Award with Walley May 25 were Acting Maritime Administrator Chip Jaenichen, Commander of Military Sealift Command Rear Adm. Thomas Shannon, and Laura Hammond, third officer, USNS Comfort.
"The rapid activation and deployment of the S/S Wright to New York and success of the mission was unprecedented, thanks to the cooperation and joint effort of afloat and shore-side personnel," said Crowley's Mike Golonka, vice president, ship management. "The entire effort was a true testament of how Crowley - and the maritime industry as a whole - can offer relief during times of great need."
In December 2012, the officers and crews of the Wright and the T.S. Kennedy were honored with the U.S. Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement in recognition of their work in bringing the ships to Staten Island and providing efficient afloat housing for Hurricane Sandy relief workers. The State University of New York Maritime College training ship T.S. Empire State VI was also honored in December with the U.S. Merchant Marine Medal for Outstanding Achievement for supporting FEMA personnel during the relief effort while on station at Fort Schuyler.
During the post-Sandy relief operations, both training ships were operated under General Service Agreements with MARAD. TOTE Services, Inc. operated the Empire State VI and General Dynamics-American Overseas Marine operated the Kennedy. AMO members worked aboard both ships in licensed positions.
The Wright , a specialized ship used by the U.S. Marine Corps, is based in Maryland.
