AMO and STAR Center to host National Maritime Day ceremony


American Maritime Officers and STAR Center will host a National Maritime Day ceremony Wednesday, May 22 at AMO National Headquarters in Dania Beach, Fla.

The events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a memorial gathering at the AMO plaque on the STAR Center grounds at 2 West Dixie Highway, followed by a ceremony at the AMO National Headquarters building at 601 S. Federal Highway at 11 a.m.

Speakers at the ceremony will include AMO National President Tom Bethel, Percy MacDonald of the American Merchant Marine Veterans Gulfstream Chapter, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami Deputy Commander Capt. James Pruett, and Dania Beach Mayor Walter Duke.

The event will take place on and is in recognition of National Maritime Day, established by presidential proclamation in 1933 to honor the men and women of the U.S. merchant marine. Each year, the service and sacrifice of these mariners in times of war throughout the nation's history are recognized, as are their substantial contributions to national defense and security and U.S. commerce.

AMO participated in a National Maritime Day commemoration in Galveston, Texas, on May 17. National Maritime Day events on May 22 will include, among others, an observance and wreath laying ceremony at the U.S. Department of Transportation, a ceremony at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy & the American Merchant Marine Museum in Kings Point, N.Y., and an observance at the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial in San Pedro, Calif.
