New AMO jobs as Seabulk christens harbor tug M/V Athena

Seabulk Towing, Inc. christened the harbor tug M/V Athena May 9 during a ceremony held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. American Maritime Officers represents all officers and crew members in the company's docking and towing fleets operating from three ports in Florida, including Port Everglades, where the Athena is based.

"Seabulk's new tug Athena is a world-class towing vessel manned by AMO's highly experienced officers and crew," said AMO National Vice President for Inland Waters Charles Murdock. "Our officers' expertise and Seabulk's decision to commit to state-of-the-art equipment bodes well for the future of AMO and Seabulk Towing in Port Everglades."

The Athena was designed and built by Washburn & Doughty Associates in East Boothbay, Maine. The Athena is 93 feet in length, with a 38-foot beam and a maximum draft of 17 feet. Her mission will be escorting and docking ships, and performing conventional towing operations. The Athena is capable of a maximum speed of 13.5 knots and has the ability to generate 62 metric tons bollard pull.

Athena's Captain Kenny Collins, who rotates with Captain Steve Rotert, said the stern-drive tractor tug's shorter length and high horsepower helps in slips and tight corners, and makes the vessel well suited for harbor work.
