The Maritime Administration has issued a new advisory for U.S. vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden, providing reporting procedures and additional information. The advisory corresponds with a surge in incidents of piracy and hijackings off the coast of Somalia.
Vessels are advised to check in with MARLO BAHRAIN at least 48 hours prior to entering the corridor and to be aware that the presence of large groups of Yemeni fishing vessels is likely in the corridor and the posting of additional lookouts is recommended.
The advisory (2008-06) is expected to be available soon on the advisory page of MARAD Web site at http://www.marad.dot.gov/Headlines/advisories.html. Also available on the site are MARAD advisories on suggested waypoints for transiting the Gulf of Aden and hijackings in the Gulf of Aden.
