AMO jobs secure on Watson class LMSRs

American Maritime Officers will continue to represent all licensed officers working aboard eight Watson class large medium-speed roll-on/roll-off ships under a new operating contract awarded by Military Sealift Command to Ocean Ships Inc. The contract is for one year firm with four one-year options, extending for a total of up to five years if all options are exercised.

The labor package AMO provided to its operating companies competing for the charter was submitted under the Tripartite Agreement with Masters, Mates and Pilots and the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association. The eight LMSRs covered under the contract are the USNS Charlton, USNS Dahl, USNS Pomeroy, USNS Red Cloud, USNS Sisler, USNS Soderman, USNS Watkins and USNS Watson.

“The AMO members working in the LMSR program are doing exceptional work in all capacities—ongoing sealift missions, military prepositioning and response readiness,” said AMO National President Tom Bethel. “Government contract awards in the RFP process are impossible to predict, and AMO is proud to be maintaining its role in this vital element of the sealift fleet.”

The new contract includes across-the-board wage and vacation increases when the ships are in full operating status, as well as across-the-board wage increases and a five-day work week when the ships are in reduced operating status.

The MSC operating contract with Maersk Line Limited expired Sept. 30 and the new contract, with all increases for AMO members working aboard the ships, took effect Oct. 1. Maersk will maintain management of the eight Watson class LMSRs while the vessels are turned over to Ocean Ships Inc. The terms of the new contract will apply for AMO members during the transition between operating companies.
