A hero in the family - O'Hanlon hailed in New York City

Air Force Cadet Garrett O'Hanlon of North Texas is being hailed as a hero in New York after jumping from a subway platform to save a man who had fallen about five feet down onto the tracks.

O'Hanlon, the son of American Maritime Officers member Brian O'Hanlon, was visiting New York for the first time in February to see his sister for his birthday, NBC 5 for Dallas-Fort Worth reported. On an early Sunday morning, he and his sister were on the subway platform at the Columbus Circle train stop when they noticed a man had fallen onto the tracks.

"I looked over and saw him down there and everyone started to scream," O'Hanlon said. He couldn't hoist the man on his own and two others jumped down to help lift the man to safety.

"The people on the platform were pulling him up, pulling us up," he said, crediting teamwork for the successful effort.

Brian O'Hanlon commented: "You always tell them to do the right thing. Well he did the right thing."

O'Hanlon attends the Air Force Academy and receives a scholarship through the AMO Medical Plan, which is a benefit available to the dependents of AMO members and AMO pensioners. Brian O'Hanlon sails as master on the M/V Ocean Freedom and has been a member of AMO since 1992.
