Last laker of the season lays up in Duluth

The U.S.-flagged laker John G. Munson sailed into the Port of Duluth-Superior Jan. 25 for winter layup, officially wrapping up the 2012 commercial shipping season in the Port of Duluth-Superior, the Duluth Seaway Port Authority reported.

The Munson is operated by Key Lakes Inc. American Maritime Officers represents the deck and engineering officers and stewards aboard the ship.

Although the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., closed at midnight Jan. 15, the Munson was able to make a handful of late-season deliveries of iron ore across the eastern tip of Lake Superior.
