On behalf of the National Executive Board of our union and all AMO employees, I extend warm wishes to all AMO members and families for a healthy and happy Thanksgiving holiday.
Our thoughts are with AMO members and families affected by Hurricane Sandy as the Northeast recovers and rebuilds in the aftermath of the storm. We can all be proud of our fellow members working aboard the S/S Wright and the training ships Kennedy and Empire State VI, which are supporting emergency responders working in some of the most damaged areas of New York and New Jersey.
The past year has been challenging for us all, marked by economic and legislative adversity on the national level, and the uncertainty this has imposed on segments of the U.S.-flag fleet. Yet, through our collective hard work and determination, AMO maintains its position of strength as the largest union of U.S. merchant marine officers, and the only union of its kind with real prospects for expansion, security and opportunity in a broad range of diverse trades.
We are grateful for the professionalism and dedication exhibited by all AMO members each day in every trade - deep sea, Great Lakes and inland waters. The skill and spirit of the AMO membership make all things possible for our union.
We understand the sacrifices this work often requires, particularly being away from home, family and friends on these occasions. Underway and ashore, we wish you all the best.
