Wind tower shipments extend season for S/S Badger

Lake Michigan Carferry (LMC) and General Electric recently came to an agreement extending the S/S Badger's shipping season to Nov. 2 in order to transport 60 wind tower sections.

The Badger has carried more than 300 over-sized wind tower shipments this year, LMC reported.

"The extension of the Badger's sailing season shows the important role the Badger plays as the short cut across Lake Michigan," said Ludington Mayor John Henderson. "The movement of wind towers between Wisconsin and Michigan is a great example of how important the Badger is to our industrial economy as well as our tourism industry."

Manitowoc, Wis. Mayor Justin Nickels highlighted the green energy industry in his city and surrounding area, and the role vessel has played. "Thanks to the S/S Badger, (wind tower manufacturer) Tower Tech is able to ship these towers across the lake in an easier, quicker fashion."

Separately, LMC reported the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 in Chicago, Ill. accepted its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Individual Permit Application as completed on Aug. 29.

"We are confident in our position and although several hurdles remain, we are now moving forward with the capital investments on the Badger for our 2013 sailing season," said Bob Manglitz, President and CEO of LMC. "We have worked very hard to get our application submitted and accepted, and we will continue to work closely with the EPA to get the five-year individual permit approved in a timely manner."

The Badger, a coal fired steam vessel, is currently operating in strict accordance with requirements and standards in its current EPA permit, which will expire in December, the company has reported. In 2008, the EPA said the vessel's discharges were appropriate under the Clean Water Act given the lack of harm and the lack of feasible or affordable alternatives. At that time, the EPA told the company to apply for an individual permit if no feasible alternative was found by 2012. Lake Michigan Carferry is pursuing a conversion of the Badger to use liquefied natural gas as fuel.

The Badger is operated under contract with American Maritime Officers.
