Several companies that own and/or operate vessels under contract with American Maritime Officers were recognized earlier this month at the Chamber of Shipping of America's (CSA) annual safety awards luncheon.
During the ceremony June 5, the 2007 Jones F. Devlin awards, which are given to companies that have operated ships for at least two years without a lost-time injury involving a mariner, were presented to American Overseas Marine Corporation, American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier, Crescent Towing, Crowley Maritime Corporation, Crowley Petroleum Services, Interocean American Shipping Corporation, Maersk Line Limited, Ocean Shipholdings, OSG Ship Management, Sea Star Line, Seabulk Tankers, Seabulk Towing, Totem Ocean Trailer Express and U.S. Shipping Partners, among others. In all, 56 vessels manned by AMO were honored.
Individual vessels manned by AMO receiving 2007 Ship Safety Achievement Award Citations of Merit included the USNS Lawrence Gianella (Ocean Shipholdings) and Brenton Reef (Seabulk Tankers).
More than 240 people representing more than 50 companies and organizations, including AMO, attended the annual industry-sponsored event.
Joseph Cox, president of the CSA, attributed the growth in the number of awards presented since the annual ceremony's inception in the mid-1950s "to the professionalism of our seafarers and the dedication of shore-based company personnel to safe operation.
The Chamber of Shipping of America represents 31 U.S.-based companies that own, operate or charter oceangoing tankers, containerships and other merchant vessels engaged in both the domestic and international trades, as well as entities that maintain a commercial interest in the operation of such vessels.
