STAR Center receives USCG approval for new Advanced Chemical Tanker course

To meet the needs of American Maritime Officers members sailing aboard chemical tankers operated by AMO-contracted companies, STAR Center has developed and received approval from the U.S. Coast Guard for an Advanced Chemical Tanker course.

Changes to STCW have now separated oil and chemical endorsements. New entrants will require both sea service on chemical tankers and specific advanced chemical tanker training to receive an STCW endorsement for chemical tankers. While federal requirements pertaining to the tankerman endorsement are not expected to change, more will be known when the U.S. Coast Guard publishes its final rule implementing the 2010 amendments to STCW. At that time, any grandfathering provisions for those with current STCW and U.S. Coast Guard tankerman endorsements will be published. In addition to meeting regulatory requirements, many vetting organizations require officers on chemical tankers to have completed an Advanced Chemical Tanker course.

In order to qualify for the Advanced Chemical Tanker course at STAR Center, an individual must have taken the one-week OR two-week Tankship Dangerous Liquids course (Tankerman PIC DL).

Anyone who successfully completes the Advanced Chemical Tanker course meets the standards of competency identified in Table A-V/1-3 of the STCW code as amended for an original or renewal endorsement in Advanced Chemical Tanker Operations. Completion of this course will not satisfy any chemical tanker service of cargo transfer requirements. The course is compliant with IMO model course 1.04.
