New AMO jobs as Military Sealift Command awards contract for M/V VADM K.R. Wheeler to IAS

The offshore petroleum distribution system vessel M/V VADM K.R. Wheeler and its support vessel Fast Tempo - Interocean American Shipping will operate both vessels under a new contract awarded by Military Sealift Command. American Maritime Officers will represent all licensed officers.

Military Sealift Command has awarded the operating and maintenance contract for the offshore petroleum distribution system vessel M/V VADM K.R. Wheeler to Interocean American Shipping, bringing new jobs to the membership of American Maritime Officers.

The contract award includes the support vessel for the M/V Wheeler, the Fast Tempo. IAS will operate both vessels and AMO will represent all licensed officers.

Work under the new contract is expected to commence in late August. If all options are exercised, the operating and maintenance contract would extend for a total of approximately five years. The M/V Wheeler is currently operated by a non-union company, and is presently located in Pusan, Korea, where the turnover will occur.

"AMO congratulates IAS on this contract award, and we welcome a new vessel to the AMO fleet and new jobs for our membership," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "We're looking forward to manning the M/V Wheeler and to a new opportunity to serve in an important role for MSC."

The M/V Wheeler and its support vessel are part of MSC's prepositioning program. The vessel's area of operation under this contract is the Pacific Ocean.

"Interocean is very pleased to have been awarded this contract, and to be able to continue developing our relationship with MSC," said IAS Vice President for Human Resources Bob Rogers. "We appreciate the support we have received from AMO, which allowed us to be competitive in this solicitation, and look forward to the opportunity to provide new job opportunities to the union membership."

MSC's prepositioning program is an essential element in the U.S. military's readiness strategy. Afloat prepositioning strategically places military equipment and supplies aboard ships located in key ocean areas to ensure rapid availability during a major theater war, a humanitarian operation or other contingency. MSC's prepositioning ships support the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Defense Logistics Agency.
