Coast Guard continues search and rescue operations, assessment in Sector Houston-Galveston

The Coast Guard announced Sunday that search and rescue operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike remained the first priority, and that it had started shifting its focus to assessment of conditions in the area.

"We recognize that getting the port open as quickly as possible is a top priority," said Capt. Bill Diehl, Sector Houston-Galveston commander. "Once we determine what we need to do to get it reopened, we will send aids to navigation teams (to) reset any buoys that may have been knocked out of position."

The Coast Guard reported it had rescued 95 people in post-hurricane operations, and that 103 people had been transported to safety in cooperative efforts before the hurricane hit Texas last week.
