The United Seamen's Service (USS) will present Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Awards for 2012 to U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Captain Robert Johnston, senior vice president and head of the U.S.-Flag Strategic Business Unit for Overseas Shipholding Group, and Niels M. Johnsen, CEO and chairman of International Shipholding Corporation.
"Niels M. Johnsen represents the finest in ship management, just as Bob Johnston brings seagoing and operational excellence to our industry. Senator Landrieu has spent her career in elected office bringing a leadership voice to efforts that benefit all Americans," said Gen. Kenneth Wykle, chairman of the USS AOTOS Committee and president of the National Defense Transportation Association. "It is our honor to honor these three with the AOTOS Award this year."
USS announced the maritime industry's most prestigious awards will be presented at a gala industry dinner and dance to be held at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, New York City, on Oct. 26, 2012. During the ceremony, U.S. mariners will be honored for specific acts of bravery and heroism at sea.
For AOTOS 2012, Michael Sacco, president of the Seafarers International Union, is dinner chairman and F. Anthony Naccarato, president and chairman of American Maritime Officers Service, will serve as national committee co-chairman. Other committee members and chairmanships will be announced, USS reported.
All proceeds from the AOTOS event benefit USS community services abroad for the U.S. merchant marine, seafarers of all nations and U.S. government and military overseas, USS reported.
