New jobs for AMO as M/V Ocean Giant enters service under U.S. flag

The M/V Ocean Giant was re-flagged into U.S. registry June 30 and is making her initial voyage under charter to Military Sealift Command, after which the ship will be part of Intermarine's U.S.-flag commercial and project fleet. AMO represents all licensed officers aboard the Ocean Giant.

The heavy-lift ship M/V Ocean Giant was re-flagged June 30 in Jacksonville, Fla. and has entered service under U.S. registry, providing new jobs for the membership of American Maritime Officers and expanding U.S.-flag capacity in the multipurpose heavy cargo fleet.

The newly built ship was re-flagged approximately six months after construction was completed. The re-flag crew went aboard the Ocean Giant June 27.

"The entry of the Ocean Giant into U.S.-flag service is one more testament to the importance of U.S. cargo preference in the creation and maintenance of seagoing jobs for American mariners," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "AMO is proud to welcome this new ship to the U.S.-flag fleet, and with it, the new jobs for our membership."

The Ocean Giant is operated by Crowley Liner Services for Intermarine affiliate US Ocean. AMO represents all licensed officers aboard the ship. The approximately 19,100 DWT ship is about 545 feet long and has three heavy-lift deck cranes, two of which have capacities of 400 tons each, and when used together are able to handle up to 800 tons per lift.

The Ocean Giant finished loading cargo in the U.S. in early July. Her maiden U.S.-flag voyage is being made under charter to Military Sealift Command. When the mission is completed, the Ocean Giant will be part of Intermarine's U.S.-flag commercial and project fleet, which provides worldwide service.
