MEBA pays AMO in settlement of Interlake contract lawsuit

American Maritime Officers and AMO Plans have received payments totaling $2.5 million from the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association District 1 and the MEBA benefit funds in settlement of AMO's tortious interference lawsuit.

Following discussions with MEBA, AMO agreed to settle the lawsuit under the terms strongly recommended by the judge presiding over the case. The settlement release is available online, as is the settlement hearing transcript.

AMO filed the lawsuit in the Lucas County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas in December 2005, charging MEBA and the MEBA benefit funds with unlawfully interfering with AMO's valid collective bargaining agreement with Interlake Steamship Company covering seven self-unloading bulk carriers. AMO was informed that, had the case gone to trial, the outcome would have been subject to multiple appeals, possibly extending to the U.S. Supreme Court.

MEBA remains under raiding sanctions for violating Article XX of the AFL-CIO Constitution on the Interlake tug/barge Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder and the Interlake-operated bulk carrier M/V Stewart J. Cort.
