AMO National Assistant Vice President Don Nilsson retires

Don Nilsson, a national assistant vice president for American Maritime Officers, retired this month after more than 29 years as a member of AMO.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Nilsson joined AMO in 1983 as a third assistant engineer and sailed for morethan 14 years with the union, primarily in the deep-sea tanker fleet. He started sailing as chief engineer in 1990.

Nilsson came ashore and began work as an AMO representative in August 1997. Initially from a base at the union's former office in New York, and later from New Jersey, Nilsson has covered the Northeast region, servicing AMO-contracted vessels and serving AMO members for the past 15 years.

"Don dedicated his entire career to the service of AMO," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "We wish him 'Fair Winds and Following Seas' in his retirement."

AMO has no plans to replace Nilsson.
