Each year, the nation recognizes the service and sacrifice of these mariners in times of war throughout the nation's history, and their substantial contributions to national security and U.S. commerce.

In addition to this and many other observances across the nation, the Maritime Administration will hold a ceremony at the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. on May 22. The event will honor U.S. merchant mariners and the nation's proud traditions on National Maritime Day.
