The AMO Pension Plan has received notice from American Maritime Officers that, as of the end of the 2011 sailing season, there is no longer a shortage of qualified AMO deck and engine officers on the Great Lakes.
Based on this determination, effective immediately, the trustees of the AMO Pension Plan will no longer grant permission to AMO pensioners under the age of 65 to return to work in covered employment on the Great Lakes without suspension of their monthly pension benefits.
All AMO pensioners who wish to return to work aboard vessels in covered or non-covered employment must first request written permission from the trustees. If permission is granted to a pensioner under the age of 65 to work in covered employment on the Great Lakes in response to a new shortage of officers, monthly pension benefits will be suspended for the duration of his or her re-employment. This has been the case for Inland Waters and Deep Sea pensioners (other than those working aboard TAGOS and TAGOR vessels) since January 2012.
Penalties remain in effect for any AMO pensioner returning to work aboard a vessel in either covered or non-covered employment without Trustee permission.
