Jobs are available with companies operating vessels under contract with American Maritime Officers and AMO is accepting new applicants for membership in the union.
On March 1, 2008, the AMO National Executive Board temporarily suspended the issuance of new AMO membership books and assigned priority to AMO book members for open jobs on the board. Although the union is not issuing new membership books at this time, and priority is still being given to AMO book members for open jobs with AMO Dispatching, AMO is accepting new applications for membership and has jobs available for applicants.
"We acted earlier this year in response to a downturn in shipping, particularly aboard government and military sealift ships, in order to protect job opportunities for full book members," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "As a result of new contracts we've secured in commercial trades and new markets, the situation we faced is being reversed.
"AMO now has a need for engineering officers, and also has expanded opportunities for deck officers," Bethel said. "We've been successful in establishing new employment for our membership and have resumed recruiting, particularly in the engineering department."
Bethel added that, while AMO book members will continue to be given priority for open jobs posted with AMO Dispatching, applicants for membership who hold permanent positions with AMO-contracted companies will retain those positions.
"Early in 2009, the Executive Board will review the temporary suspension on issuing new books to determine if it is still necessary," Bethel said.
