AMO gains jobs in the Great Lakes fleet as American Steamship charters new ATB

American Steamship Company (ASC) has chartered a newly constructed articulated tug/barge (ATB) for service in its U.S.-flag fleet on the Great Lakes, adding new jobs for members of American Maritime Officers.

"Expansion of the AMO job base on the Great Lakes under our new contract with ASC is an exciting and promising development," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "We welcome the new vessel and the new opportunities for AMO members sailing on the Lakes."

In an announcement issued by the company, David Foster, president of ASC, said: "We are very pleased to add this new ATB, designed to transport dry-bulk commodities, to our fleet and look forward to commencing its operation on the Great Lakes during the upcoming sailing season. This U.S.-flagged 10,700-horsepower tug and 740-foot self-unloading barge, with a cargo capacity of 34,000 tons, constructed by Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, LLC of Erie, Pa., will allow ASC to more efficiently serve our customers."

A subsidiary of GATX Corporation, ASC provides waterborne transportation of dry-bulk commodities on the Great Lakes with a fleet of modern, self-unloading vessels. ASC has been operating on the Great Lakes since 1907, joining GATX in 1973. AMO represents the licensed deck and engineering officers aboard all vessels in the ASC fleet.
