Coast Guard no longer offering reduced fees for mariners on TWIC

Responding to direct inquiries, the U.S. Coast Guard has stated reduced fees will no longer be provided to merchant mariners renewing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

AMO National Vice President for Government Relations Michael Murphy has called attention to the problem and will raise it again at the TWIC Stakeholders meeting in February. However, it remains doubtful the Coast Guard will reinstate the discounted fee.

As stated by the Coast Guard:

Mariners who are being issued an initial Merchant Mariner Credential, or who never held a TWIC, will need to enroll for a TWIC at a TWIC enrollment center. They will also have to pay all applicable fees associated with getting a TWIC. TSA will continue to conduct all screenings associated with the TWIC, which the Coast Guard uses for issuance of a MMC.

The Coast Guard no longer conducts the full evaluation of a mariner; TSA now does the security review and evaluation. Mariners with or without an MMC are not entitled to a TWIC discount or reduced fee that was available for the initial start-up of the TWIC program.
