AMO Pension Plan: notice to pensioners regarding returning to work in covered employment

The following notice dated Dec. 1, 2011, was sent from the AMO Pension Plan Office to AMO Deep Sea and Inland Waters deck and engineering pensioners who have received permission to return to work in covered employment and is being provided here for your information.
Re: Revocation of Permission to Return to Work in Covered Employment without Suspension of Pension Payments
Please be advised that the shortage of qualified Deep Sea and Inland Waters deck and engineering officers has eased to the point that the Trustees of the American Maritime Officers Pension Plan will no longer grant permission for AMO pensioners to return to work in covered employment without suspension of pension payments during their period of re-employment. This does not apply to pensioners working on the Great Lakes or pensioners working aboard TAGOS and TAGOR vessels under contract with AMO, as a shortage of qualified Great Lakes officers and officers qualified to man the TAGOS and TAGOR vessels still remains.

Deep Sea and Inland Waters pensioners who are currently working in covered employment with Trustee permission may continue working in their current assignments. However, the pension payments of any AMO Deep Sea and Inland Waters pensioner (other than those working aboard TAGOS and TAGOR vessels) who continues to work in covered employment aboard a vessel after January 31, 2012 will be suspended during the remainder of the period of re-employment.

Going forward, all Deep Sea and Inland Waters pensioners who wish to return to work in covered employment in new assignments must first request and receive written permission from the Trustees and, if approved, any monthly pension benefits payable to the pensioner will be suspended during their period of re-employment. The Trustees' decision whether to grant permission will be based on the Rules and Regulations of the Plan, the supply of AMO deck and engineering officers at the time, and the circumstances of the request. Penalties remain in effect for a pensioner who returns to covered or non-covered employment without written permission from the Board of Trustees of the AMO Pension Plan.
