More than 80 vessels manned by members of American Maritime Officers were among those recognized in November by the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) with Environmental Achievement Awards for 2011 for attaining at least two years of environmental excellence in operations. Nine have gone more than 10 years without an incident.
"These awards celebrate the dedication to environmental excellence of our seafarers and the company personnel shore-side who operate our vessels to the highest standards," said Joseph Cox, president of CSA.
Vice Adm. Brian Salerno, deputy commandant for operations, U.S. Coast Guard, participated in the awards ceremony, held Nov. 17 in Washington, D.C. Certificates of Environmental Achievement were presented to a total of 1,181 vessels, of both U.S. and foreign registry, which have operated an average of 6.9 years without incident.
Criteria for the award include a two-year period with no reportable spills, U.S. Coast Guard or port state citations for violations of MARPOL, or violations of state or local pollution regulations.
Companies recognized for environmental excellence that manage and/or own vessels operated under contract with AMO included Crowley Liner Services, General Dynamics-American Overseas Marine, Interocean American Shipping Corporation, Keystone Shipping Company (Key Lakes), Maersk Line, Limited, Ocean Shipholdings Inc., OSG Ship Management Inc., Pasha Shipping Group, Sea Star Line LLC, Seabulk Tankers Inc., Teekay Corporation, Totem Ocean Trailer Express, and USS Vessel Management LLC (U.S. Shipping Corporation).
