AMO jobs secure aboard SBX-1 under new charter

Members of American Maritime Officers will continue to man the Sea-Based X-Band Radar platform (SBX-1) in all licensed positions under a new charter awarded by Military Sealift Command to the vessel's incumbent operator, Interocean American Shipping Corporation.

The SBX-1 will remain deployed to the Pacific Ocean providing ballistic missile tracking and object discrimination information for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. The base period of the new contract runs through September 2012 and the award includes four one-year options, which if exercised would extend the contract through September 2016.

"IAS has been involved with the SBX since the inception of the program and many of the officers and crew have also been involved with the vessel since that time," said Interocean American Shipping Vice President for Human Resources Robert Rogers. "We are fortunate to have an exceptional group of highly dedicated AMO officers and SIU crew members. Their professionalism and the cooperation of the unions in assisting IAS with training the coordination of assignments have been essential factors in the success of this program. We now look forward to the opportunity to serve MSC in the future in the same excellent manner that has become the persona for SBX-1."
