New AMO jobs as Maersk Line, Limited assumes management of USNS Wheat

Maersk Line, Limited today (Sept. 30) took delivery of the USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat, providing new jobs for members of American Maritime Officers under a contract awarded to the company by Military Sealift Command.

MSC has also awarded the contract for the USNS GYSGT Fred W. Stockham to Maersk Line, Limited. The USNS Stockham and USNS Wheat were awarded as Lot 2 and Lot 3 of an MSC request for proposals covering a total of 11 maritime prepositioning ships. Both ships were previously operated by non-AMO companies.

"It is with great pleasure that I can report that (today) we hoisted the Maersk Line, Limited colors as they took over the operation and maintenance of the USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat," said AMO member Capt. Christopher Begley, master of the USNS Wheat. "This milestone marks the first time the officers of AMO have been on the deck plates of this vessel since it entered Military Sealift Command in 2002."

MSC originally awarded the charters for 10 MPS ships to Maersk Line, Limited. Three ship management companies filed protests with the Government Accountability Office. All three companies filing protests were unsuccessful bidders under MSC's request for proposals.

Following the protests, MSC rebid Lots 4 and 5.

Lot 4 covers five Maritime Prepositioning Squadron ships - the USNS 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, USNS Sgt. William R. Button, USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus, USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams, and USNS 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez - and was awarded to Maersk Line, Limited.

Lot 5 covers three Kocak Class prepositioning containerships - the USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak, PFC Eugene A. Obregon and USNS Maj. Stephen W. Pless - and has not yet been awarded.

The one remaining lot in the RFP covering the USNS 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin, which had not been operated under AMO contract, was awarded to a non-AMO company as a small business set aside.
