STAR Center to acquire dynamic positioning equipment, provide complete DP training for AMO officers

The AMO Safety & Education Plan's STAR Center will be acquiring the training equipment necessary to provide dynamic positioning courses to members of American Maritime Officers - a development expected to create new job opportunities for the union's membership.

"There are many great job opportunities that require DP training, particularly in the offshore energy exploration and support services markets," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "We have been working on expanding opportunities for AMO officers in these areas for some time.

"Due to the unique selection of jobs available to our membership under AMO contract, a large group of AMO officers currently have full certification or partial qualification for work on dynamic positioning vessels," Bethel said. "The ability to provide the required training at STAR Center is the final rung in the ladder for AMO to become a top source for DP-certified officers in markets facing a growing shortage."

STAR Center will be acquiring DP training systems and four DP models - a supply vessel, a semi-submersible, a tanker and a drill ship - from international DP system designer Kongsberg Maritime Simulation. The technology AMO members will use to learn the systems is the same as that aboard offshore support vessels, cable layers, research ships, cruise ships and other DP-enabled vessels and drilling rigs worldwide.

Phil Shullo, director of training for the Simulation, Training, Assessment & Research Center in Dania Beach, Fla., said the school "views this important addition to our suite of high-value simulation training services to be of strategic importance to ensuring AMO members are prepared to operate the most technologically advanced vessels in support of AMO contracted companies. The first order of business will be to seek Nautical Institute accreditation and enter this market quickly."

Henry Tremblay, president of Kongsberg Maritime Simulation, said: "We are proud to be affiliated with STAR Center and with this latest sale. As evidenced by continuing strong sales of Kongsberg DP systems in the Gulf of Mexico, the DP market is on solid footing and STAR Center is strategically positioned to capture their share of it."
