As a Transportation Worker Identification Credential renewal bubble nears, mariners are encouraged to renew their cards early to avoid delays.
"Around the end of 2012, a large percentage of TWICs will come due for renewal and all those card holders will have to renew at the same time," said AMO National Vice President for Government Relations Michael Murphy. "To avoid delays, mariners would be wise to renew their TWICs early."
Murphy recommends mariners renew their TWIC if they are renewing any other documents. There is no penalty or time restriction on TWIC renewal - AMO members may do so at any time.
Unfortunately, TWIC renewal procedures are similar to enrollment procedures. Mariners must appear in person at a processing center, return to pick up their card and pay the $132.50 in fees. American Maritime Officers is among the organizations that have been pressing for a remedy to this burden on mariners, but no major changes are anticipated in the near future. Murphy sits on the TWIC Stakeholder Committee in Washington, D.C., which has recommended to the Transportation Security Administration that mariners be able to renew and activate their TWICs through the mail.
More information about the renewal process is available online.
