Strategic partnership with defense shipyards expected to strengthen industry's voice

In a move the Shipbuilders Council of America (SCA) expects will strengthen the voice of the American shipbuilding industry, the Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions of Huntington Ingalls Industries, as well as General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, joined the trade association last week. General Dynamics NASSCO is also a member of the SCA.

"Today's announcement is an important development for the effective representation of the shipyard industry in our nation's capital," said SCA President Matthew Paxton. "The integration of these major defense construction shipyards into the SCA will improve the industry's ability to speak with one voice to Congress and the administration about the critical need for a strong shipyard industrial base. We are excited about the strategic opportunities to advance the shared goals and interests of our diverse membership,"

The SCA's agenda for 2011 includes promoting and protecting the Jones Act, maintaining a shipyard industry to build and repair vessels for new markets such as offshore renewable energy, advancing the America's marine highways initiative and advocating for Coast Guard and U.S. Navy improvements.

The SCA made the announcement at the Congressional Shipbuilding Caucus quarterly breakfast, hosted by the Navy League of the United States and SCA, as well as honorary co-chairs U.S. Representatives Rob Wittman (R-VA) and Joe Courtney (D-CT). Also in attendance were Representatives Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), Steve Palazzo (R-MS), Bobby Scott (D-VA), Rick Larsen (D-WA) and Jeff Landry (R-LA).
