AMO member Capt. Mike Ross, master of the Maersk Michigan, recently accepted the Coast Guard Public Service Commendation on behalf of his crew for the 2010 at-sea rescue of two men in the Straits of Hormuz.
In June 2010, the Maersk Michigan was en route to Sitrah, Bahrain when crew members heard voices in the water. The vessel turned around and conducted search and rescue operations until they found two men floating among debris, more than 100 yards from each other. The men were using Styrofoam to stay afloat, as they had no life jackets.
The crew rescued both men using a rescue boat, provided them shelter and dry clothes, and transferred them to Bahraini immigration authorities. Neither appeared to have any injuries.
The award was presented by Capt. John S. Kenyon, Commanding Officer for Coast Guard Activities Europe on behalf of Vice Adm. Robert C. Parker, Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area.
