MARPOL requirements in Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico take effect May 1

The U.S. Coast Guard has announced MARPOL V discharge requirements for ships in the Wider Caribbean Region special area (WCR SA) will go into effect May 1. The special area includes the Gulf of Mexico.

Annex V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) covers pollution from garbage. Certain ocean regions are considered "special areas" and are covered by more stringent regulations under MARPOL.

Effective May 1, no person may discharge garbage from a ship except food wastes. The disposal of food wastes shall be made as far as practical, and under no circumstances fewer than 12 nautical miles, from land. Certain finely ground food waste may be discharged no fewer than three nautical miles from land.
