Military Sealift Command has awarded the operating contracts for the USNS GYSGT Fred W. Stockham and USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat to Maersk Line Limited, adding new ships and new jobs to the American Maritime Officers fleet.
"The process for this RFP has been very lengthy and I'm pleased at this point we'll have new ships joining our union's job base," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "These are great jobs serving important roles in the MSC fleet."
The USNS Stockham and USNS Wheat were awarded as Lot 2 and Lot 3 of an MSC request for proposals covering a total of 11 maritime prepositiong ships. MSC originally awarded the charters for 10 of the ships to Maersk Line Limited. Three ship management companies filed protests with the Government Accountability Office. All three companies filing protests - Waterman, Keystone and AMSEA - were unsuccessful bidders under MSC's request for proposals.
Following the protests, MSC rebid Lots 4 and 5, and the contract awards have not yet been announced.
Lot 4 covers five Maritime Prepositioning Squadron ships currently operated under AMO contract - the USNS 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, USNS Sgt. William R. Button, USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus, USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams, and USNS 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez. Lot 5 covers three Kocak Class prepositioning containerships - the USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak, PFC Eugene A. Obregon and USNS Maj. Stephen W. Pless.
The one remaining lot in the RFP covering the USNS 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin, which is not currently operated under AMO contract, was awarded to a non-AMO company as a small business set aside.
The contracts, with all options exercised, can extend until Sept. 30, 2015, according to the RFP.
