AMO member to participate in 'Women at Sea' event in New York City

AMO member Marissa Strawbridge, second mate on the SBX-1, will represent female mariners at a panel and film event honoring the history of America's seafaring women in New York City tomorrow night.

As part of Women's History Month, Working Harbor Committee, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the history and present-day importance of the Port of New York and New Jersey, will host "Women at Sea," a program designed to highlight the important contributions women make to the maritime industry. The event will include a broadcast of the documentary "Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women" and will include a panel discussion with Strawbridge and other women in the maritime industry.

"I'm honored to be included in this event and glad that the organization is taking the time in Women's History Month to recognize women at sea," Strawbridge said. "I encourage women to look into sailing careers."

Strawbridge works aboard the SBX-1, a semi-submersible, dynamically positioned sea based X-Band radar platform operated by Interocean American Shipping. The vessel does work for the Missile Defense Agency, part of the U.S. Department of Defense, and is stationed in the North Pacific near Hawaii.

"I love the freedom of being at sea, even though it's difficult being away from home all the time," Strawbridge said. "I do enjoy being on the bridge. I have a great view."
