American Maritime Officers members will continue to man the USNS Lawrence H. Gianella under a new operating charter awarded to Ocean Ships Inc. by Military Sealift Command.
The new contract is scheduled to commence April 1, with the firm period extending to the end of fiscal year 2011. The contract includes four one-year option periods, which if exercised would give the new charter a lifespan of 4 1-2 years.
"AMO has a proud tradition and exceptional record manning the T-5 tankers for MSC," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "Credit for our union's success in this fleet goes to the officers on these ships who have worked so effectively under very challenging mission conditions."
Under the new contract, the USNS Gianella's mission will include a prepositioning role in Diego Garcia in support of the U.S. Marine Corps.
"We appreciate the opportunity to continue providing services for Military Sealift Command and the Afloat Prepositioning Force supporting the U.S. Marine Corps," said Jim McGregor, president of Ocean Ships. "I believe this is an important contract recognizing the expertise of the officers and unlicensed seafarers and the shoreside staff who have worked together to make the T-5s so effective for all of these years.
"My thanks go out to our whole team that made it possible for us to win the contract," McGregor said.
The new contract under the request for proposals for the USNS Gianella was awarded as a small business set-aside.
