MARAD posts advisory for vessels transiting to or from Japan

The U.S. Maritime Administration today posted on its Web site an advisory for "vessels transiting to or from Japan or in waters in the vicinity," recommending among other things that vessels avoid transiting within 50 miles of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

As stated by the advisory: "The U.S. Coast Guard recommends, as a precaution, that vessels avoid transiting within 50 miles (80 kilometers) of the Fukushima nuclear power plant at position 37 degrees 19 minutes north, 141 degrees 01 minutes east."

The advisory, which MARAD requested be distributed by U.S.-flag vessel operators to vessels in the affected areas, also recommends mariners monitor and comply with NAVTEX and NAVAREA XI warnings, and that they "keep abreast of information being provided by the government of Japan relating to any further potential impacts."

The complete advisory (2011-02) is available on the MARAD Web site.
