In memory of Captain John "Jack" D. Flanagan: 1942-2011

Captain John "Jack" D. Flanagan passed away Monday, March 14, 2011, in his native Massachusetts. He was 68.

Flanagan graduated Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1963 and sailed with United Fruit prior to joining American Maritime Officers (then District 2 MEBA) in 1976.

From 1976 through 1983, he sailed as master with Cove Tankers. From 1985 through 1988, he was the delivery master for all five AMSEA Maritime Prepositioning Squadron vessels - M/V 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, M/V PFC Dewayne T. Williams, M/V 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez, M/V 1st Lt. Jack Lummus and M/V Sgt. William R. Button (all five ships are now classified "USNS"). Flanagan delivered all five ships without incident and trained many of the officers in the fleet, contributing to the tremendous success of this program.

In October 1983, Flanagan maneuvered the M/V American Eagle unassisted into Grenada supporting U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army personnel shortly after U.S. military operations commenced to liberate the island from extremists.

In 1988, Flanagan returned to the Cove Trader for one more trip before retiring from AMO in 1989. Jack continued to guide young officers in the industry from his retirement through this past month.

Captain Flanagan will always be remembered for his exceptional shiphandling abilities, good seamanship and unflappable sense of humor. He was an outstanding shipmate and will be dearly missed.
