New TELEX number for Right Whale Mandatory Ship Reporting (MSR) System

The following bulletin was issued by Capt. Don Lewis, right whale/shipping industry liaison, National Marine Fisheries Service:

The Mandatory Ship Reporting System has a new TELEX number for reporting vessel arrivals in the MSR areas for WHALESNORTH (Boston and Cape Cod Bay) and WHALESSOUTH (Brunswick, Ga.; Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville, Fla.).

The new TELEX Number is: 48156090.

Vessels that report MSR arrivals via TELEX must use the new number effective immediately (Note: The WHALESSOUTH MSR reporting area is only active from Nov. 15 to April 16).

This change only affects those vessels that report by TELEX. The existing INMARSAT address currently in use remains active.

The previous TELEX Number that began with 236 has been published in numerous publications and materials. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Coast Guard are working to update these publications and materials as soon as possible to reflect the new number. This includes the Coast Pilot, Right Whale Ship Reporting System Placards, and the recently published “Prudent Mariners Guide to Right Whale Protection” CD-ROM.
