Maritime Industry Congressional 'Sail-In' slated for May 4

The U.S. Maritime Coalition has announced this year's Congressional "Sail-In" will take place on Capitol Hill May 4, 2011. The Sail-In will look to build on the success of last year's inaugural event, which was widely supported by the American maritime industry, including international and domestic ocean carriers, terminal operators and labor unions.

Both American Maritime Officers and American Maritime Officers Service participated in the 2010 Maritime Industry Congressional Sail-In, joining dozens of representatives of maritime labor and industry in a battery of meetings with Congressional Representatives, Senators and key staff members across Capitol Hill.

Members of American Maritime Officers are strongly encouraged to participate in the Sail-In, to meet with elected representatives and to help give a voice in Congress to the men and women of the U.S. merchant marine.

Commenting on the 2010 Sail-In, Vice Adm. Albert Herberger, a former U.S. maritime administrator and leader of the event's volunteer organizing group, said: "We had folks from 20 states, 48 congressional districts, 28 companies, 9 unions and labor organizations, and 10 related associations.

"That's a powerful message to Congress," he added.

The purpose of the Sail-In is to increase Congressional awareness of the importance of America's maritime industry to the economic and national security of the United States, and to generate support for the programs and policies important to the survival and growth of the U.S.-flag merchant marine and to the jobs of American merchant mariners and America's maritime workforce.

Mariners and union and company representatives interested in participating can visit http://www.maritimeindustrysailin.com to get information and register (at no cost) for the event.
