The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a safety alert recommending the inspection of fuel oil quick-closing valves. Quick-closing valves are capable of isolating fuel tanks in the event of a fire. The safety alert recommended engineers, operating company representatives and others involved in inspections check quick-closing valves to make sure they are operational and properly maintained. According to the safety alert, Coast Guard port state control officers have recently discovered that quick-closing valves have been modified, blocked or poorly maintained.
